1. What we compare
We compare high-interest savings accounts offered to individuals living in Canada.
To appear in our tables, an account must:
- be open to the general public, not reserved for clients of a paid banking package;
- let you withdraw your money at any time, or with no more than 30 days’ notice, which we flag;
- be offered by an institution whose deposits are covered by CDIC, by the AMF in Quebec, or by a provincial credit union insurer.
For now, we do not compare GICs, term deposits, exchange-traded funds (ETFs) or foreign currency accounts.
2. Where rates come from
We record every rate on the institution’s official page, never on another comparison site or in a press release. The link to that page is in the Source column of our tables.
For each account, we record:
- the regular rate, meaning the annual rate paid with no special conditions;
- the promotional rate, if any, with its length and main conditions (new clients, new deposits, cap);
- the minimum deposit and any fees;
- the deposit insurance coverage;
- availability in Quebec.
When a rate depends on the balance, we show the rate for a $10,000 balance and say so.
3. When we check
- Every week, we re-check every rate in our tables.
- The same day, when an institution announces a change or the Bank of Canada changes its policy rate.
- Flagging: a rate we have not been able to re-check for more than 14 days is shown in grey, with the date of the last check.
The check date is shown at the top of each table.
4. How we rank
- By default, our tables are sorted by regular rate, from highest to lowest.
- When rates are equal, the order is alphabetical.
- You can sort by promotional rate or filter accounts, but no setting takes commissions into account.
Whether an institution pays us or not never changes its position. We accept no payment to appear, to move up a ranking or to get a “top pick” label.
5. How we are paid
Some institutions pay us a commission when a reader opens an account through our links. These institutions are marked with a ● in the tables. The details are on our About page.
Institutions that pay us nothing stay in our tables, with a link to their website.
6. What we don’t do
- We don’t accept deposits and we are not a bank.
- We don’t recommend an account based on your personal situation. Our tables are general information.
- We don’t guarantee that a rate is still current: check it on the institution’s website before opening an account.
7. If we make a mistake
Despite our checks, mistakes can happen. If you spot one, write to us at contact@laiseewise.com. We fix it within 2 business days, and we note the correction and its date below the table concerned.
